Coreopsis, also known as tickseed, is one of the most dependable flowering plants for hot climates, and the red variety brings a bold, velvety splash of color to garden beds. In Florida coreopsis thrives with very little fuss—it loves full sun, well-drained soil, and once established, is highly drought-tolerant. Fun fact: coreopsis is Floridas official state wildflower, and while these red varieties aren’t found in the wild like the yellow ones are they still grow just as well and add a fun new color way to your wildflower garden. Plants can be cut back when they look tired to encourage fresh growth. Red coreopsis is not only striking in the landscape, but it’s also a pollinator favorite, drawing in butterflies and bees. It works beautifully as a border plant in your yard, in mass plantings to echo a meadow, or even as a cheerful cut flower tucked into the corners of your veggie garden.

If you are into dyeing with plants coreopsis is a great starter plant that can be used to make dye paths or for contact dyeing.
