From the moment we met our client during an initial site visit we knew this would be a wonderful relationship. The site for the garden was also evident right away. Peeking through weeds and shrubs were two impressive Meyer lemon trees and dozens of large oolite pavers, aged and mossy, leftover from a landscaping project from many moons ago. Healthy mature citrus trees in south Florida are as rare as Florida panthers so naturally they would be the center piece of this garden. Using the repurposed oolite pavers we designed a kitchen garden that would speak to the historic feel of the home while modernizing functionality and accessibility for many years to come. Our clients wanted to integrate the garden into their daily lives, they wanted to be inspired to eat healthy and enjoy nature in their own backyard. Sitting under a large covered patio they have a perfect view of the many birds, butterflies and bees that visit the citrus blossoms and the array of wild flowers we added as an understory. An earthy oolite path and neatly tended vegetable planters lead around the corner to a gate often used for guests. Our routine visits to help maintain this garden using organic methods create boundless opportunities to share knowledge with our client. They always look forward to our visits and share the morning hours with us in the garden.
