Cockscomb Celosia is one of those plants that stops people in their tracks when they visit our farm. Its blooms look almost unreal—ruffled, velvety crests that resemble a rooster’s comb, which is where it gets its name. Flowers can be brilliant shades of red, orange, yellow, or pink, and they hold their color for a long time, even when dried. In fact, many people use them in everlasting bouquets. Here in zone 10b, Celosia thrives as an annual and grows quickly. It loves full sun, well-drained soil, and consistent watering (but not soggy feet). Heat is no problem, making it a great choice for our subtropical climate. Beyond the looks, Cockscomb has some interesting backstory. In parts of Africa and Asia, young celosia leaves are eaten as a nutritious leafy green, and in traditional medicine, the plant has been used for everything from cooling fevers to supporting eye health. While you’ll probably grow it for its beauty, it’s fun to know it has a useful side too. Plant a few, and you’ll instantly add a pop of drama and whimsy to your garden beds or containers—neighbors are guaranteed to ask what it is!
